Quiet Time Devotional: Finding God in the Middle of the Chaos

The school year is in full swing, and if you’re like most middle and high school students, life is probably busy. Between sports practices, school projects, family responsibilities, and trying to keep up with your friends, it can feel like you’re juggling a million things at once. Maybe you’re even wondering, How am I supposed to find time for God in all of this?

Here’s the good news: God isn’t waiting for your schedule to clear up. He’s with you right in the middle of your busy, messy, unpredictable life. This quiet time is designed to help you pause, breathe, and refocus on what matters most.

Reflect: When Life Gets Overwhelming

Think about your week so far. What’s been the most overwhelming part? Maybe it’s a big test, a tough conversation with a friend, or just feeling like you don’t have enough time to do everything.

In the middle of all that noise, Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”

This verse isn’t saying you have to stop everything and sit in silence forever. Instead, it’s an invitation to pause—just for a moment—and remember that God is bigger than any stress, worry, or pressure you’re feeling. When you stop and acknowledge Him, you’re reminded that you’re not carrying all of this on your own.

Scripture: Matthew 11:28-30

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Jesus gets it. He knows life can feel heavy. But here’s the thing—He doesn’t expect you to carry it all by yourself. He invites you to come to Him, to let Him help you with the weight of everything you’re carrying.

What does this look like in your life? Maybe it’s praying about your stress instead of trying to handle it alone. Maybe it’s letting go of trying to be perfect and trusting that God’s grace is enough for you.

You don't need the beach or your friends to do quiet time-- God is ready to meet you in your room, on the field, in rehearsal and on the school bus.

Pause & Pray

Take a minute to pause and reflect on these questions:

  • What’s been weighing you down this week?
  • Have you invited God into those moments, or have you been trying to handle them on your own?
  • How can you find rest in Him this week?

Here’s a simple prayer to help you refocus:

God, I’m carrying so much right now—school, sports, friendships, family. Sometimes it feels like too much. But I know You see me, and You care about all of it. Help me to trust You with the things I can’t control. Give me rest, peace, and strength to keep going. Thank You for being with me, no matter how busy life gets. Amen.

Practical Ways to Connect with God During the Week

Life doesn’t stop, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make time for God. Here are some simple ways to stay connected with Him, even when you’re busy:

  1. Start Your Day with Gratitude
Before you grab your phone in the morning, take a moment to thank God for one thing—big or small. It could be as simple as, “Thanks for giving me a good night’s sleep” or “Thanks for my friends at school.” Starting your day with gratitude helps shift your focus to Him.
  2. Pray Between Classes
Got a few minutes between periods or before practice? Use that time to talk to God. It doesn’t have to be long or formal—just a quick, “God, help me stay focused today” or “Thanks for helping me get through that test.”
  3. Listen to Worship Music While You Study
If you’re allowed to play music while doing homework, try putting on a worship playlist. It’s a simple way to remind yourself of God’s presence, even while you’re working.
  4. Reflect Before Bed
Before you fall asleep, think about your day. Where did you see God at work? Maybe it was in a kind word from a friend, a moment of laughter, or even just getting through a hard situation. Thank Him for being with you in those moments.

Anchored in Truth: God is with You in Every Season

Middle and high school can feel like a rollercoaster. One day, you’re crushing it on the soccer field or acing a test, and the next day, you’re overwhelmed by homework or drama with friends.

But no matter what season you’re in, God is with you. Joshua 1:9 says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

This truth doesn’t change—whether you’re at summer beach camp, sitting in math class, or navigating a tough situation at home. God is constant, and He cares about every detail of your life.

Looking Ahead

The school year is full of opportunities to grow—in your faith, your friendships, and your understanding of who God is. But growth doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when you intentionally make space for God, even in the busyness of life.

So this week, take a few moments each day to pause, pray, and reflect. Let God meet you in the middle of the chaos and remind you that He’s got you, no matter what.

Because even in the busiest seasons, He’s still the One holding it all together.
